With Fairtrade Fortnight upon us, we thought we’d refresh your memory regarding the Fairtrade movement and what impact it has on people around the world.
What is Fairtrade Fortnight?
For two weeks every year, thousands of people across the UK come together as one voice to promote and raise awareness for the farmers and labourers who grow our food. These people usually live in the poorest parts of the world, and as a result, are often exploited and unfairly paid. This year there is a focus on the workers who facilitate the growth of the main ingredient of the chocolate we love so much – cocoa.
The Growth of Fairtrade
Fair Trade has become a global movement of building awareness around the inequalities within the world trade system. It stands to promote suitable and safe working conditions, fair pay in relation to labour and market conditions, and in general, fair trading conditions for labourers and farmers. Where some might relate fair trade products to coffee alone, the fair trade market has dramatically expanded over the past 50 years. So much so, that regularly you will be presented with a fair trade option – possibly without even realising it - when making a purchase. According to he Fairtrade Foundation, their “mission is to connect disadvantaged farmers and workers with consumers, promote fairer trading conditions and empower farmers and workers to combat poverty, strengthen their position and take more control over their lives.”
